It’s official! Exactly 20 years ago today was my introduction to the incredible world of website development.

Woo hoo! 20 years, baby!

Check out my introduction to HTML if you haven’t read it.

Little did I know at the time, my introduction to HTML would be so significant, it would literally change the entire course of my life.

Being 12 years old, I had no idea what I wanted to do "when I grew up." That is, until I really started to learn and practice writing code. I’m not going to lie — the learning curve was so much more difficult than anything I had ever done in school.

I didn’t even know there would be a viable business opportunity by pursuing web development, but that didn’t matter.

“Never trust a computer you can’t throw out a window.” — Steve Wozniak

I somehow still liked it, despite the many times I wanted to give up, throw my computer out the window, and become Amish.

I would make an amazing butter churner. That’s a joke, people. 😜

I got off track here. Where was I? Oh yes, the learning curve was steep, but I somehow saw the potential of web development almost immediately. Some have called it a gift. I’m not sure what it was, but I’m grateful to have seen it when I did.

And so I kept trying and trying. And I failed more times than I could count.

But then something clicked. I had written the required HTML document tags so many times, my fingers could type them in my sleep.

And I knew how to link pages together with what they would call "hyperlinks." Or add images to a page (but I sometimes forgot to resize them down so it didn’t take 5 minutes to load one picture over 56k dial-up).

But I was learning more all the time. And the more I learned, the more I became interested. It really created this snowball effect that eventually turned into a life of its own.

Kind of like Bumble, the Abominable Snowmonster.

I finally got to a point where I genuinely loved programming on the web. There’s just something magical about building something from nothing and it being beautiful, functional, and accessible to potentially millions of people around the world instantly.

And that’s what drives me to keep it up. Here’s to another 20 incredible years, and way beyond! 😘💻
